TEWKESBURY.—The first branch of the Tewkesbury Coffee House Company (Limited) was opened on Tuesday, the 17th ultimo, at No.14 Barton Street, by the Worshipful the Mayor, J. H. Bronghton, Esq. The ceremony of opening was preceded by a public meeting held in the Assembly Rooms of the Town Hall, at which the Mayor presided. A considerable number of the local clergy, gentry, and tradespeople were present, all apparently anxious to show their hearty appreciation of the object in view. The Mayor, in commencing the proceedings, remarked that, as a medical man, he could positively assert that the amount of drink taken was unnecessary to health and injurious to the morals of the people. Mr. J. P. Sargeaunt dwelt, in a concise speech, upon the commercial prospects of the Company, and deprecated the feeling that had been expressed respecting opposition to any trade existing. There was no coffee house in Tewkesbury, and they had a right to open a commercial undertaking to sell tea, coffee, &c., without entering into any spirit of opposieion. Capt. St. Clair Ford (Cheltenham) related his experience respecting the working of Coffee Taverns in that town and in the various towns he had visited, and by the interest manifested today he prophesied the success of the scheme. The Vicar (Rev. Hemming Robeson) said the Company had his hearty support, and he felt if any town ever wanted a coffee house Tewkesbury did ; and in proposing a vote of thanks to the Mayor he wished them God speed. Mr. Joseph Yorke, in the absence of his son, Mr. J. R. Yorke, M.P., seconded the vote of thanks, which was carried with enthusiasm. The audience then went to the house, where the Mayor declared the ' Victoria Coffee Tavern' duly opened, and asked for the first cup of coffee. A good trade was done all day, about £12 being taken. The honorary secretaries, Messrs. F. Allis and M. Smart, may be congratulated on the prospects of the undertaking. The tavern is under the management of Mr. and Mrs. Grebbell.

— At the fifth annual meeting, held recently, the directors reported that, notwithstanding several changes in the management forced upon them during the year, they were enabled to present a balance-sheet showing an improvement on any former year since the commencement of their operations. The directors hope they have at last succeeded in procuring the service of a suitable manager, who will study the interest of the Company and enlarge the basis of its operations. After allowing 5 per cent, for depreciation, the directors have transferred an additional £10 to the reserve fund, and recommended the usual dividend of 5 per cent, to be paid out of the balance remaining.

— The directors again congratulate the shareholders on the continued prosperity of their undertaking. The zeal of the manager is unabated, and he is entitled to the approbation of the shareholders for his unremitting attention to their interests. The directors recommend the payment of a dividend of 10 per cent., out of a profit of £100 19s. 2d., and are able to write £40 off for depreciation and to add £40 to the reserve fund, and hope thus in a few years to purchase premises of their own, so that the Coffee-tavern may become one of the permanent institutions of the town. The sum of £29 16s. lOd. is carried forward.

REPORT.—In presenting their Ninth Annual Statement of Accounts to the shareholders, the directors have the satisfactionv of reporting an increase both in the volume and in the profit of the business. If the same prosperity continues, the directors hope in a short time to be in a position to recommend a re-arrangement of the interior of their premises, and thus afford more suitable accommodation to their customers.

TEWKESBURY COFFEE TAVERN COMPANY.

THE annual meeting of the shareholders of the above company was held at their rooms on Tuesday week, under the presidency of the vice-chairman (Mr. F. J. Brown). The 10 per cent, dividend recommended by the directors was sanctioned by the shareholders. The retiring directors, Messrs. F. J. Brown W. G. Healing, E. W. Edgwick, W. J. Gardner, and W. H. Watts, were re-elected. Votes of thanks to the directors, the hon. sec. (Mr, J. Surl), and management were adopted. It was announced that Mr. J. P. Sargeaunt had resigned the chairmanship, but the wish was generally expressed that the managing committee might induce him to re-consider his decision, and a hearty vote of thanks to him was agreed upon.

1890

TEWKESBURY COFFEE HOUSE CO., LIMITED. ELEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT.

The directors of the above company presented the eleventh annual statement of accounts to the shareholders on the 4th of February. The receipts were slightly in excess of those of last year, whilst the payments have also been less, making an increased profit of £10 Is. 8d. The directors therefore confidently recommended a dividend of 10 per cent., and have a larger sum than last year to place to the reserve fund. The satisfactory condition of the company is in a great measure due to the continued exertions and unremitting attention of all connected with the business of the company, to whom the directors desire to express their hearty thanks.

1891

TEWKESBURY COFFEE TAVERN COMPANY, LIMITED

THE directors presented their twelfth, annual statement of accounts to the shareholders, on Feb. 12. The general prosperity of the company is most satisfactory. The balance sheet shows an increase of property. Against a capital of £700, available assets of property, stock, and cash amount to over .£1,100. The shareholders may therefore be congratulated on the satisfactory result of twelve years' trading. The directors recommended a dividend of 10 per cent.

1892

THE TEWKESBURY COFFEE HOUSE COMPANY, LIMITED.

—The report and financial statement show that the total receipts of the tavern during 1891 amounted to £913 2s. 2d.; an increase of nearly £100 over those of the year previous, and the net profits to £122 4s. 5d an increase of £21 17s. 3d. A dividend of 10 per cent, was declared on the £700 capital, and the balance added to the reserve and depreciation funds. The lucrative character of this little concern may be gathered from the fact that thirteen years ago it was started with a capital of £200 raised in £1 shares. Subsequently more shares were issued, and the capital raised to £700, in order to purchase the tavern property. The actual worth of the assets at the end of last year was £1,161 9s. 4d., giving a surplus of £461 9s. 4d.
