TEWKESBURY.—The first branch of the Tewkesbury Coffee House
Company (Limited) was opened on Tuesday, the 17th ultimo, at
No.14 Barton Street, by the Worshipful the Mayor, J. H. Bronghton,
Esq. The ceremony of opening was preceded by a public meeting
held in the Assembly Rooms of the Town Hall, at which the Mayor
presided. A considerable number of the local clergy, gentry, and
tradespeople were present, all apparently anxious to show their hearty
appreciation of the object in view. The Mayor, in commencing the
proceedings, remarked that, as a medical man, he could positively
assert that the amount of drink taken was unnecessary to health
and injurious to the morals of the people. Mr. J. P. Sargeaunt
dwelt, in a concise speech, upon the commercial prospects of the
Company, and deprecated the feeling that had been expressed
respecting opposition to any trade existing. There was no coffee
house in Tewkesbury, and they had a right to open a commercial
undertaking to sell tea, coffee, &c., without entering into any
spirit of opposieion. Capt. St. Clair Ford (Cheltenham) related his
experience respecting the working of Coffee Taverns in that town
and in the various towns he had visited, and by the interest manifested
today he prophesied the success of the scheme. The Vicar
(Rev. Hemming Robeson) said the Company had his hearty support,
and he felt if any town ever wanted a coffee house Tewkesbury did ;
and in proposing a vote of thanks to the Mayor he wished them
God speed. Mr. Joseph Yorke, in the absence of his son, Mr. J.
R. Yorke, M.P., seconded the vote of thanks, which was carried
with enthusiasm. The audience then went to the house, where the
Mayor declared the ' Victoria Coffee Tavern' duly opened, and asked
for the first cup of coffee. A good trade was done all day, about
£12 being taken. The honorary secretaries, Messrs. F. Allis and
M. Smart, may be congratulated on the prospects of the undertaking.
The tavern is under the management of Mr. and Mrs. Grebbell. |

1884
TEWKESBURY COFFEE HOUSE COMPANY, LIMITED. — At the fifth annual meeting, held recently, the directors reported that, notwithstanding several changes in the management forced upon them during the year, they were enabled to present a balance-sheet showing an improvement on any former year since the commencement of their operations. The directors hope they have at last succeeded in procuring the service of a suitable manager, who will study the interest of the Company and enlarge the basis of its operations. After allowing 5 per cent, for depreciation, the directors have transferred an additional £10 to the reserve fund, and recommended the usual dividend of 5 per cent, to be paid out of the balance remaining. |
1886
TEWKESBURY COFFEE-HOUSE COMPANY, LIMITED. — The directors again congratulate the shareholders on the continued prosperity of their undertaking. The zeal of the manager is unabated, and he is entitled to the approbation of the shareholders for his unremitting attention to their interests. The directors recommend the payment of a dividend of 10 per cent., out of a profit of £100 19s. 2d., and are able to write £40 off for depreciation and to add £40 to the reserve fund, and hope thus in a few years to purchase premises of their own, so that the Coffee-tavern may become one of the permanent institutions of the town. The sum of £29 16s. lOd. is carried forward. |

A dividend of 10 per cent, was declared on the £700 capital, and the balance added to the reserve and depreciation funds.
