TEWKESBURY HISTORY with special sections on Pubs, Inns, Hotels and other sites in the Licensed Trade past and present, with the recent addition of Census Returns and Transcribed Tewkesbury Wills.
|
Many of the extracts here are from sources that I originally used in the course of tracking down lost Tewkesbury pubs, hotels, inns and beerhouses. However, it seemed such a waste to keep this information hidden from those who would not normally come accross it: so here it is. This has now turned into an ongoing project and more information will be added, and existing presentation improved upon, regularly and often. Most of the lists here relate to local tradesmen and private residents, especially those involved with pubs, inns and beerhouses, who appeared in various local directories and other publications. The other stuff is also mostly at the popular level in the sense that it does not yet include major historical events or Tewkesbury Abbey history. The contents here are aimed at local people who are probably well aware of the basic history of Tewkesbury and its historical context. I have tried to be accurate in transcribing the information but anyone serious about the subject should consult the original sources. Apart from information on the history of the licensed trade, alleys, lincensing laws, and census returns, there are a lot of miscellaneous lists of names and serious and humorous newspaper extracts, not easily categorized; No attempt has been made to write a history, but the site may reward the browser with something perhaps relating to their own past.
