In the name of God Amen the four and twentieth day of May Anno Domini 1620, and in the years of the reign of our sovereign Lord James, by the grace of god of England, Scotland, France and Ireland King, defender of the faith etc. that is to say of England France and Ireland the eighteenth and of Scotland the three and fiftieth. I Johan Smithsend of Tewkesbury in the county of Gloucester, widow, being in good and perfect remembrance, all laud and praise be given to the lord therefore, do ordain and make this my last Will and Testament in maner and form following.That is to say, first and principally I yield and commend my soul to Almighty God, my creator and maker, and to Jesus Christ my saviour and redeemer, and my body to be buried in the parish Church or Churchyard of Tewkesbury aforesaid. Item. I do give unto the poor of the town and parish of Tewkesbury aforsaid twenty shillings of lawful money of England, to be distributed at the descretion of my overseers. Item I doe give unto Elizabeth Hampton, my daughter, forty shillings of lawfull English money to be paid unto her within two years and half next after my decease. Item. I do give more to the said Elizabeth Hampton, my daughter, my best gown, my best hat, my taffety apron, and my best lawn ruff. Item. I do give and bequeath unto Elinor Mason, my daughter, four pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid unto her within two years and half after my decease. Item I do give more to the said Elinor Mason, my daughter, my best peticoat, my best smock peticoat and my second best ruff. Item. I do give and bequeath unto George Whitledge, my godson six pounds three shillings and four pence of lawfull English money, the which my will is shall be employed to the use of the said George Whitledge by my two sons Nicholas Smithsend and Thomas Smithsend at or before the end and expiration of two years and half next after my decease, and the same so employed with the benefit and profitt that shall arise thereof my said two sons Nicholas and Thomas Smithsend, shall pay unto the said George Whitledge, when he shall accomplish the age of twenty one years. And if it happen that the said George Whitledge do decease before he do accomplish the age of twenty one years, then my will is that the money to him before given being employed as aforesaid, shall remain and come to Thomas Smithsend and Elizabeth Smithsend the children of my said son Nicholas, and unto Thomas Smithsend and Anne Smithsend the children of my said son Thomas, equally to be divided amongst them. Item. I do give unto Nicholas Smithsend, my godson twenty shillings. I do give unto Johan Beale my goddaughter five shillings. Item. I do give unto Elinor Hampton, the daughter of my said daughter Elizabeth, my Sundays peticoat. Item. I do give unto Alice Smithsend of Walton Cardiff, widow, my Sundays gown. Item. I do give unto Johan Smithsend, my gddaughter, one smock and one ruffe of Scottish cloth. Item. I do give unto Johan Wood, the servant of my said son Thomas, one smock, one canvas apron and one kerchief. The rest of all my goods, moveable and unmoveable catells and chatells, not before given and bequeathed, my debts being paid and my funeral expenses discharged, I do give and bequeath to my said son Thomas Smithsend, whom I do ordain and make my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament. Lastly I do desire Henry Mason, my son in law, and my said son Nicholas, to be my overseers, to see this my last will and testament performed and for their paines I do give unto them two shillings apiece. In witness wherof I, the said Johan Smithsend, have to this my last will and testament. put my hand and seal, given the date and year first above written.
