Last Will and Testament of John Packer of Tewkesbury. Gentleman.

In the name of God amen, the twenty fifth day of April Anno Domini one thousand six hundred and forty six, and in the one and twentieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King Charles, by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, defender of the faith. I, John Packer of Tewkesbury in the county of Gloucester, gentleman, being weak in body but of perfect memory, thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, do hereby make and declare my last will and testament in writing in manner and form following, that is to say, First and principally, I give and bequeath my soul unto the hands of Almighty God, my creator and unto the Son of Christ, my Saviour and Redeemer, and to the Holy Ghost my Comforter, in full assurance of the remission of my sins, and salvation of my soul by the death and merits of Jesus Christ my said Redeemer. And I commit my body to the earth from whence it came, and to be buried in the church of Tewkesbury near unto the grave wherein my grandchildren Edward -------- and John Parker, and to be both covered by one stone. If I happen to die in Tewkesbury, I do also will and request my executor hereinafter named, that there may be a sermon preached at my funeral and that the text thereof shall be out of the ----- chapter of Ecliastes and the seventh verse, and that the preacher that preacheth the same sermon ten have shillings for his pains in preaching and burying my corpse. And as touching the worldly estate which it hath pleased God to endow me with, I do dispose of them in manner following. First I give and bequeath unto my son William Packer the sum of thirty pounds, parcel of his sum of threescore pounds which is due and owing unto me from one William Wayte of Charlton Kings in the county of Gloucester and the sum of ten pounds, parcel of the said threescore pounds, I give to my grandchild William Packer. And I do give unto my grandchild Anne Packer the sum of twenty pounds, the residue and remainder of the said sum of threescore pounds, which said threescore pounds is due unto me upon bargain and agreement between the said Wayte and my self heretofore made, touching the sale unto him of one messuage or tenement with one garden thereunto belonging, situate, lying and being in a place called the Mill Bank in Tewkesbury aforesaid, wherein one Francis ------- the said Wayet upon his said bargain had delivered unto him certain writings touching the same. And if in case my said son and grandchildren shall fail to receive or recover the said threescore pounds, then my will and meaning is that my said son William shall have and enjoy the said messuage or tenement with the appurtenances to him and his heirs forever, paying for the same, twenty pounds to Anne Packer, his daughter, and ten pounds to his son William Packer, which I do hereby give and bequeath unto him and them in default of having satisfaction of the said threescore pounds from the said William Wayte. Item, I give and bequeath unto my said son William one of my gowns laced with budge. And also I give unto Anne, his wife, one silver bound bowl which is now in his possession and keeping. Item, I give and bequeath unto my grandchild William Packer, six silver spoons whereupon there is engraved the letters of W.P. for the name of William Packer at the end of every spoon. Also I give and bequeath to my said grandchild William Packer one signet gold ring with the -------- --- --- upon it. and also one great bible and one other book called --------- ------ , and the desk in the chamber called the dining chamber. Also I give unto the said William one ------ drawing table board in the said room which is arched that the same may remain as standard in the said room. Also I give unto the said William a silver bowl called a -----bowl which is in his possession also. Item, I give unto my said grandchild, Anne Packer, one silver and gilt bowl called the ------ bowl and one bible gilt. Item, I give and bequeath unto my grandchild John Crowther ------- several messuages or tenements with several gardens and backhouses belonging, situate, lying and being in a street called the High Street in Tewkesbury aforesaid and now in the occupation of Richard Flower, Walter Edwards, Mary Sweet, Hugh Kemp, Robert ------ and Andrew Baughan, to have and to hold the aforesaid messuages and tenements with all and singular their appurtenances unto the said John Crowther and his heirs for ever. Item, I also give and bequeath unto my said grandchild John Crowther one sealing gold ring whereupon are the Drapers Arms on two letters of J.P. for John Packer. Item, I give also and bequeath unto the said John, my ----- ---- apparel ruff upon ------. Item, I give and bequeath unto my grandchild William Crowther one messuage or tenement known by the sign of the Bell, with one stable and garden with all and singular the appurtenances, situate, lying and being in a street called the Church Street in Tewkesbury aforesaid and now in the possession of William -------, gentleman. Also I give unto my said grandchild one cupboard, two bedsteads and three table boards and all other goods and standards of mine which are in the said house. Item, I give unto the said William one bible to have and to hold the aforesaid messuage or tenement with all and singular the appurtenances unto him the said William Crowther his heirs and assigns forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Patience Crowther one gilt silver wine bowl with little ---- on --- --- upon the same. Also I give unto the said Patience the sum of twenty pounds. I do also give to the said Patience one little gold ring and one bible. Item, I do give unto my grandchild Anne Crowther (as I am informed her name is) but I mean the youngest of my daughter Patience's children be it by what name soever, the sum of twenety pounds and one bible. Item, I give unto my daughter Patience one gilt silver spoon salt with the cover. Item, I give unto my son in law, Thomas Crowther, one of my gowns laced with budge and also one ---- of figures ---- ----and one pair of hose which are of branched satin and one pair of silkstockings. I also give, will and desire that the said Thomas shall have delivered unto him a book called a book of ------ which I heretofore had from the said Thomas, and my other books as my said executor shall please to give unto him. Item, I give unto my brother , Christopher Packer and his son John the sum of ten pounds to be paid within three years after my decease, my debts being first paid. Iten, I give unto Dorothy Dyer the wife ------- Dyer alias Withington the sum of forty shillings. Item, my will and meaning is that ------- my wife shall have and receive the rents and profits of that foresaid several messuages and tenements during her life so as she doth keep herself a widow and her several tenements are sufficient reparation. I do will and desire that the several legacies given and bequeathed in money shall be paid unto them severally at such time as they shall severally attain the age of one and twenty years or happen to be married which shall first happen. But the ring, bible and other things formerly given to be delivered within twelve months after my decease and I do hereby nominate and appoint my aforesaid wife and John Crowther, my grandchild to be my sole executors of this my last will and testament unto whom I give and bequeath all the residue of my goods and household stuff, debts and personal estate not formerely bequeathed in trust to pay for payment of her funeral expenses and debts which I do now owe and the several legacies hereein before bequeathed. And if it shall happen that my peersonal estate shall appear to be more than will pay my debts and legacies, and that my estate by gathering in of my debts or otherwise, shall hand any overplus or goods in their hands, or my estate amounts to more than herein bequeathed, that then the same shall be after the decease of my said wife equally divided amongst the children of my daughter Patience Crowther. And if it shall happen that my debts and personal estate shall not appear to be sufficient to pay my debts and legacies foresaid bequeathed, that then my will and meaning is that my grandchild, John Crowther shall pay or secure to pay to his sister the sum of twenty and six pounds before he shall enjoy the premises to him bequeathed, and that the said William also pay toward the satisfaction of his said sister' legacies herein bequeathed, the sum of fourteen pounds before he sahll enjoy the premises to him bequeathed. Item, I do nominate and appoint my loving ftriends, Richard Beale?, Thomas Crowther, my son in law , and William Packer, my son, to be my overseers of this my last will and testament unto whom I do give ten shillings apiece, and I do hereby revoke all former wills in witness whereof I do hereunto put my hand and seal the day and month above written.
