Last Will and Testament of John Rogers of Tewkesbury.

| In the name of God amen the fourteenth day of April in the year of our Lord god one thousand five hundred three score and one, I John
Rogers of Tewkesbury in the county of Gloucester, being sick in body but, god be praised, of good and perfect remembrance do ordain and make this my present testament declaring therein my last will in form and manner following. First, I bequeath my soul unto almighty God, my maker and redeemer, and my body to be buried in the parish church of Tewkesbury aforesaid. Item, I give unto the parish church of Tewkesbury aforesaid for my burial there -------. Item, I give and bequeath all that my house or whole burgage called the Swan with his appurtenaces, set, lying and being in Tewkesbiury aforesaid in the street there called the Oldbury Street, between the house or whole burgage of the heirs of Lawrence Payne? deceased on the north part and the Inn called the Hart on the south part, unto Alexander Brown my kinsman to have and to hold to him and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten in fee for ever of the chief lords of the fee thereof by ------ --------------------------------- And if happen the said Alexander to die without heirs of his body lawfully begotten then I give and bequeath the foresaid house called the Swan with his appurtenances to Margaret ------ my kinswoman to have and to hold to her and to the heirs of her body lawfully begotten in fee forever of the chief lords of the fee thereof by -------- --------------------. And if the said Margaret ------ do happen to die without heirs of her body lawfully begotten then I give and bequeath the said house called the Swan unto Thomas Taylor son to Elizabeth Taylor, my sister, to have and to hold to him and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten in fee for ever of the chief lords of the fee thereof by -----------------------------------. And if happen the said Thomas Taylor do die without heirs of his body lawfully begotten then I will that the said house called the Swan with his appurtenances shall remain to the next of blood or -------- of me the said John Rogers to have and to hold as before is said. Item, I give and bequeath to Margaret ----- my kinswoman in ready money six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence to be paid to her at the day of her marriage. Item, I give to the said Margaret, two pair of ------------------------------------------------ and two candlesticks. Item, I give and bequeath unto Mabel Heynes in ready money six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence to be delivered to her at the day of her marriage, and if she die before the day of marriage then I give and bequeath her six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence to Margaret ----- my kinswoman aforesaid, and if Margaret my kinswoman do die before she be married I will that her part or portion before mentioned shall remain to my sister Elizabeth's children. Item, I give and bequeath unto Thomas Taylor and George Taylor my sister Elizabeth's sons ten pounds to be equally divided between them whereof I will that my sister Elizabeth shall receive at the hands of Alexander ------- three pounds six shillings and eight pence -------------- that the boys shall have it at the age of twenty years and the residue to be payed them at the said age and if one of them do die then I will that his part shall remain unto his other brother. And if they do die both then I will that the their part shall remain unto their mother and her other children if she have any in time to ------. Item, I give to Kenelm Cotterell three pounds six shillings and eight pence. Item, I give and bequeath to Ambrose -------- two children forty shillings to be equally divided between them. Item, I give and bequeath unto Anne -------- forty shillings. Item, I give and bequeath to the reparation of the parish church of Tewkesbury five pounds to be paid in five years, that is to say every year twenty shillings until the money --- up. Item, I give and bequeath to Joan ------ her finding at the Swan during her life and three pounds of money to be delivered unto her to her own use. Item, I give to Alexander Brown for her finding and paying to her as is aforesaid six pounds thirteen shillings and four pence. Item. I give to Alexander Brown aforesaid my best gown, my best cap, my tippet, my best spoons all of silver, conditionally that the said Alexander do pay twenty pounds of my --------- toward the fulfilling of my legacies. Item, I will and bequeath to the poor people forty shillings to be distributed to them at the day of my burial. Item, I give and beqeath to the Long Bridge at Tewkesbury to be bestowed there upon the ----- side of the water of Avon five pounds. Item, I give to Thomas ------ my man, ten shillings. Item. I give and bequeath to George -------- my man ten shillings. Item, I give to William ----- my man ten shillings if he do abide and ---------------------------. Item, I give Nicholas ----- my black gown. Item, I give to Alexander Brown a ----- of silver, a goblet of silver and a flat piece of silver conditionally that the said Alexander do pay ten pounds for the said plate ---------- to the fulfilling of mmy legacies. the residue of all my goods and chattels both moveable and unmoveable I give and bequeath wholly unto Bridget my wife and her I do ordain and make my whole and sole executrix of this my present testament and last will and she to pay my debts and to receive my debts and to see ------------------. And I do ordain andd make my wellbeloved friends William Cole and John Butler of Tewkesbury aforesaid the overseers of this my present teatament and last will and to a pair of them I do give ------ for their pains to be taken in this behalf.
