Last Will and Testament of Thomas Reed of Tewkesbury. Innholder.

In the name of god amen, I Thomas Reed of Tewkesbury in the county of Gloucester, innholder, being weak in body but of perfect memory, praised be God, do make and ordain my last will and testament in manner following. First, I commit my soul into the hands of my maker, assuredly hoping for salvation by the death and passion of my lord and saviour, Jesus Christ, and my body I will shall be decently buried at the discretion of my wife and executors hereinafter named. And as for my worldly estate I dispose thereof as followeth. First, I give to my son Thomas, my best silver bowl, my good silver salt, my little trencher, silver salt, six of my best silver spoons and my signet rings, to be delivered to him at the age of two and twenty years. Also I give unto my said son Thomas, the sum of four hundred pounds of lawful money, to be paid unto him at his age of two and twentyn years aforesaid. Also I give to my son Robert, my best second silver bowl and half a dozen silver spoons, and the sum of three hundred pounds in money, to be delivered and paid unto him at his age of two and twenty years. Also I give unto my son John, my third silver bowl and half a dozen silver spoons and three hundred pounds of lawful money, to be paid and delivered unto him at his age of two and twenty years. And my will is that if any or either of my said children shall die and depart this life before his or their portion given to him or them by this my will as aforesaid shall come due and payable, that then the portion of him or them so dying shall be equally distributed to and amongst the survivors and survivor of my said children. Also I give unto my loving wife all the goods and chattels that shall be and remain in my house called the Swan at Tewkesbury at the time of my death, hereafter particularly mentioned. That is to say, all my wine, beer , malt, corn, hay, straw, horses ----- and all other my household goods, except what is otherwise disposed of by this my last will and testament. Also I give unto my said wife, my lease of certain lands lying in the old way in Tewkesbury and one yearly rent of five and twenty shillings payable to me out of a house in the possession of John Cook in Tewkesbury and all the estate or interest, trust or claim I have or may have of in, unto or out of the same house.Also I give unto my said wife my messuage or tenement with the appurtenances in the Barton Street in Tewkesbury, now in the possession of Francis Little and John James, glover, for and until my son Thomas or my heirs at law shall attain the age of two and twenty years, and then I will the same messuages or tenement with the appurtenances shall remain to my son Thomas and his heirs for ever. Also I give to my said wife, my messuage called the Swan in Tewkesbury with the appurtenances, for and during her natural life, provided and my will is that my wife shall therefore pay to my son Thomas the yearly rent of fourteen pounds of lawful money for every year my wife or her assigns shall enjoy the same messuage, after my said son Thomas shall attain his age of two and twenty years, and after the death of my said wife I give the same messuage called thed Swan with the appurtenances to my son Thomas, his heirs for ever, and if my son Thomas shall die and depart this life without heirs of his body, then after such estate as I have given to my wife in the messuage in the Barton Street in the possession of Francis Little and John ---- and in the Swan in Tewkesbury I give the same messuage with the appurtenaces to my said wife and the legacies and bequests before, in, and by this my will given unto her, shall satisfy and pay all such debts as I shall owe at the time of my death and that she, before receipt of the same legacies so given to her shall give security to my executors hereinafter named to pay the same debts. Also I do hereby nominate and appoint my loving friends Richard Baugh of Twyning. master ------- Baldwyn of Twyning, master Anthony Palmer of Great Comberton, executors of this my last will, in trust to see the same performed. Also I will and desire my wife to educate and bring my children in learning and the fear of God, and as they are fitting to place them apprentice with the advice of my executors. And my will is that my executors shall pay my wife toward the education of my children, ten pounds for each child yearly for so long as my wife shall educate and provide for my ------- children or each of them. And my will is that my executors shall provide money to ----- my said children apprentice and that my executors shall distribute and dispose the ---------- of my estate over and above what is disposed by me aforesaid, to and amongst such of my children as shall be living when my youngest child shall attain the age of two and twenty years. And my will is that my executors shall be allowed out of my estate such charge and expense as they shall be put unto about the execution of this my will. Also I do give to my kinswoman Mary Vaughan, thirty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid unto her when she attain the age of two and twenty years. Also I do give to each of my executors ten shillings to buy him a ring. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the seventh day of April one thousand six hundred fifty four.
